the bad news...

Due to excessive training and on doctor's advice I am obliged to cancel my trip to Sofia. In the first place I want to thank everybody who believed in my ideas and supported me. It's hard for me to admit, but as I feel now, I can't do it.
First of all I want to thank Jomasport, the people who already sponsored me, the pupils of De Wingerd and the KSA for organising a bar. All the money, 275€ in total will be put on the account of Haiti 12-12.
Maybe one day, this dream will come true.

New date!

Dear friends...
I already told you my plans were changed. Today I arranged the new date to leave. I will leave on 6th of July and will be back at home the 27th of July.

-I will have to bike 120 km/day
-There will be a van following me
-I will return with that van

The next thing I want to ask is the following. Who wants to make this journey with me for three weeks in a van? All you have to do is look for places to sleep (plan B is the van itself off course), buy stuff to eat and drink and ride 120km/day app.
You can make it a holiday yourself for the rest and it will be an adventure to never forget.

You can all contact me if you know someone who would like to do this.

There is a plan B if nobody can or wants to do this, don't you worry...

Biking to Sophia for Madeira?!

As you all know, my goal is to collect money for the good cause, just by biking to Sofia. It's up to you where the money goes. I guess even the people of Madeira could use some support. As you may have noticed, Haïti is not that hot anymore in the media, but the needs of the people there are still the same.

Cambodia - Khmer!

Hi Tine,
I'm excited to hear such a good deed from a person who has a good heart, a person who cares. Here is the translation. My name is Mono. I'm married and have a daughter. I'm currently living in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I know about this blog from a friend of mine. This is the least I can do for the people of Haiti. I wish they would have their suffering relieved.
Best regards!

Frithjof Noe

Mails which can make a difference!

jupse

I am not going to translate the whole mail. The text in bold means: Linking the usefull to the joyfull!

Yesterday at work, I asked 17 youngsters of 15 to 16 years old, why they are on this planet. There were 5 of them who said the same. To link the usefull to the joyfull!

Isn't a life full of joy a usefull life my friends? Why shouldn't we link all of the joy in this world to the usefull in stead of earning money to spend on cars? You would better spend it on a bike and take it to Sofia for example!

Thank you Frithjof Noe for your part in this world! Big changes come by little actions!

searching for interpreters

Dear friends
Concerning my stupid plan to bike to Sophia in 2 weeks. I am looking for interpreters who can translate this text under here.
Any language is ok for me! Just spread the message in your language!
Hello! I am a little Belgian who takes his bike and plans to bike from Ghent in Belgium to Sofia in Bulgaria in 2 weeks! I am not crazy, I am very motivated!

I would very much like following languages:
Bulgarian (with its beautifull Cyrillic Alphabet!!!!)
Serbian
Romenian
Hungarian
Slovakian
German
French
Dutch
Farsi
Chinese
Jappanese
Korean
...

I guess there are more than those languages (All African countries for example!!!!)
If you know someone, who knows someone, who knows someone I am sure we can even put this in Indian for example! You can add languages yourself off course. Mailing to mieltosophia@gmail.com

If you find someone, the girl or boy in fact has to add a little profile pic with his translation and one sentence in English in which he or she explains
who he or she is and
where he or she lives today.
And how they know about this blog.

It is just to send out the message to eveyone about this biketrip! It will cost you five minutes and will inform million of people!

Thanks!

another day on the bike, another story

From this morning on, I told myself biking to work, with my gps. It could be very funny to ask people the way to for example 'Drongen'.

So this morning I did. I was biking and suddenly I saw a tired looking man sitting in a garden. That was very strange so it catched my eyes... I stopped immediately. Every eyecatcher could be an opportunity i thought. For what I wasn't sure. But for the game I was to play that morning... I realised, the man could tell me the way to Drongen. Maybe he could help me...

I stopped and got of my bike. I asked the man to come. As if he had been sleeping all night in that garden, frozen cold, and smoking a cigarette, I suddenly realised that he really had been sleeping there. I realised that, because he looked very ashamed. But I asked him to come. I had a big problem you know. Maybe he could help me...

So I asked him the road to Drongen. Immediately he started to smile. Off course he knew where Drongen was. That wasn't so hard at al he laughed. Just straight and when you reached the lights to your left. But they were working there he added. But I guess you will make it by bike.

I told him I was biking to Sofia. In fact Sofia means Wisdom. That's quite a nice word for a capital isn't it. He nodded as if he wanted to say. Yes I know where Sofia is. But he looked at me and said... You are biking to Sofia? I laughed out loud and said: Yes!

I told him about this blog. And I told him if he would have once in a life time opportunity to check my blog, he could read this story on the blog. If, off course he understood English.  He smiled a lot. And I searched for a little note to write the address on.

You have to know dear readers. This man's body temperature was raised by 10 degrees in those five minutes we talked. There was some kind of connection. A man alone in a garden smoking a cigarette and a little boy on his bike to Sofia. Two people on their way. Trying to make the best of the life they were given.
While searching a note, I realised that man maybe didn't got the same opportunities as I was given since I was born.

I just wanted to share my adventure with him. Maybe he was even not able to buy a bike. He just sat there. Smoking, passing time, getting worried and cold I guess. I mean, it was minus 10 degrees... Freezing cold you know.

And when I found a note I realised, it was in fact a gift that I was given by a friend of mine. It was worth 20€ in AS Adventure. Last week I already went to take a look for what I could buy. To be honest. And, Kristof, no offence, I really was very happy with your voucher. The only thing in the whole shop I could find were socks. To be honest. I don't need socks. But off course they make you buy stuff that costs much more. That fucked up thing is called marketing you know. And when I was in that shop with my voucher I told myself: If I don't need socks. I won't buy anything else with this voucher. In your face AS Adventure. And from then on, the voucher was in my backpack.

Back to our situation this morning, I realised by noticing it was a voucher, that the man in fact, maybe would be very helped with this socks. And if I didn't know: I wrote the name of my blog on the paper.

I gave it to him and said. You definetely have to read my blog! He smiled like he had not been smiling for years. And then he saw my Gps...

He asked what it was. Now it was my time to laugh. Its a little machine, I said. A machine that will show me the way to Sofia. Ow he said, that's very handy. I know I said. In fact I'm off to Sofia you know, and not to Drongen...
I can assure you that you can find the man in As Adventure. And I hope he finds the socks I saw! And maybe one day he reads this story I wrote. That would be great. And Kristof, concerning your voucher, I'm sure it is well spend!

Take care folks!

Filip Velo

This morning, biking to work. At a bus station in Mariakerke. The morning mist blocking my view, I suddenly lost my navigation system. It fell on the ground. A man passing by with his little boy, friendly helped me out and gave back my GPS.
He laughed a little while he said:"You really need this one?" I told him I was planning to bike to Sofia... There was a little silence.... In Bulgaria I said... another too long silence... And then a sigh and  his eyes twinkled... A little smile appeared on his face... One of disbelieve and hope... You must be kidding, he said, hoping I would tell him about a big adventure... And so I did. I know a guy like you he said. I'm not sure about his real name, but I call him Filip Velo! He does everything by bike. He works in a Bike shop.
Now it was my time for smiling. This could be a man who really knows what I am looking for I thought. A man who knows about the mystery of life. A man who knows that there's more than rushing and standing in line to work by car. A man who enjoys nature... As if an oppurtunity knocked on the door at the back of my head I asked everything about this man. And a few hours later I met him. A modest man, of which I saw I could learn a lot. And with twinkling eyes, by coincidence I thought, I had, by biking to work, met a guy who was passionate about biking. All day long I saw the little son of the man looking at me... Looking with more hope than disbelief, as if he tried to say: Don't you worry little Belgian, just take your bike, even without this navigation, you will succeed. And satisfied and tired I fell asleep.

Training Saturday 1 (06/02/2010)

Yesterday I biked for about 60km. I visited some of my friends, my grandmother and my parents. It was a whole day on the bike. But with two differences in mind. I will have to bike more than the double per day, and I will not be able to visit people I know. You can watch the plan to the left and the pictures I took will be posted on later! The list of sponsors is growing by the way!  [update here] Take care!

Thank you Manish, Veerle, Jaap and Marie

From now on, I will count every sponsored 5 euros as if one Haitian is helped by you. The counter is at 127€. That means 25 Haitins were helped by 4 people only already!

Thank you Marie, Veerle Jaap and Manish! You can find the results here:

And now for me: on the bike for a hard day of training today!

Open source for the good cause!

As it was my birthday yesterday and everybody came to visit me by suprise... I thank you all! I really had no idea... Off course it made it impossible for me to update this blog. So I owe my fans something in replacement. Therefor I made a 'printscreen' of the statistics of my blog. As many of you keep asking me: Why the hell do you put this blog in English - you can see, some of my visitors come from Spain, Bulgaria, France... etc. Not a very big surprise if you think about it... On the second hand:

As I will bike from Ghent to Sofia, I will pass Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Serbia and last but not least Bulgaria. The plan is to bike all of this country's as you may not be fully aware. Don't worry, I am! :) In total my GPS tells me its about 2280 km. Mathematically it makes 130km/day for a period of 18 days. With an average speed of 20km/h it's in fact 7 hours/day on the bike. That leaves me 17 hours for sleeping and eating. Which means 7 hours of sleeping and 10 hours of eating/day. You have to be honest: this maybe seems crazy but if you look at this like I do... It seems as if it really could work...

I make a promise to all of you: All of you who want to pay for Haiti and for me being so nuts to bike all that distance, only will have to pay it if I really make it. I put in my good will and all my powers nature has given me. All you have to do is give one little bill of 5 euro. Even a coin of 2 Euro, or 10 eurocents...

On the other hand. Don't worry about me. I know myself. I will get there. I made it last year, I'll make it this year. I'll do it my way! It's up to you which way you take... But I would love it if I could pay all this little bits of money together and give it away. As something we realised trough my love for sports, nature and adventure. Tell me, Is this not a message everyone should be able to read. Even if you're Hungarian, Romanian, Serbian, Spanish, French, Austrian. You should know, not all people speak three or four languages like we do. But I'm sure no other country can raise a project like this. Finding one guy who bikes for 2280 km and others just paying out of disbelief. And the best part of it all: in fact I don't really care. My bike is ready, my route is drawn, my mind is made up. Now it's up to you I guess! Just spread the news and watch this blog and I am sure all of us will be amased, what only 5€ could do. Even more: with only 5 euro one Haitin boy is able to have some treatment for the things nature caused to him. I dare nature and its powers to give those Haitins back some of what they lost without choosing for it. Now its up to you to choose how much of those boys deserve some treatment. Three of you decided that already 15 Haitins are helped. Just watch this blog to keep track of how much of them will follow! See you later folks! I hope all 533 of you!

First international sponsor!

When I opened my mailbox as I do every evening after coming home. I found a mail of Jaap. It is the Dutch guy who kept on catching me up on my way to Compostella. We biked together for some days, until he had to admit that I am far more crazy then he is.
First of all: Jaap, thanks for the sponsoring. Everybody should know Jaap did a similar act on his way to Compostella last year. You can still find his blog on http://pilgrimjaap.whereareyou.net/
On the picture you see, as a joke could begin. Once upon a time there was a Dutchman, a French guy and Belgian heading to Compostella... (from left to right: Jaap, Vince and Me) Since Jaap is my first international sponsor I dare all Belgians who claim people from the Netherlands being greedy. In fact he is officially the first one who sponsored me after my girlfriend and my mother...
Today I shot some pictures on my way to work, you can find them here [click here]

Training days: Spanish trucker by the side of the road

Today was my first guided trip with my GPS to work. And as God tried to warn me for the hard moments to come, it was pooring rain all the way back home.
But I can assure you that following a beeping GPS felt much more comforting than trying to read and follow a little written manual which had been updatet some three years earlier.

Almost arriving home, I saw a truck was standing still by the side of the road. As I passed by, I remembered a moment on my way to Compostella, where I met a Bulgarian trucker who had lost his way. So I turned back and asked the man if everything was OK. It was a Spanish trucker who was looking for the way to Ghent and who didn't speak a word if English. He found it very funny I had a GPS. I explained him he had to follow me as he had to pass my home and it would be the easiest as he didn't almost speak a word of English, and so he did. I also wrote him the address of this blog and told him about my trip to Santiago. Astonishingly how well my Spanish was understood. Esquirda, Derecha, Bycicletta, Compostella, Dos mil kilometras! And off he was, flashing his big lights and waving enthousiasticly for the help I offered. It felt like David helping a friendly Goliath. The biker vs the trucker. And in fact I realised that truckers maybe where the only one realising what it is to be alone on the road for thousands of miles. And the fact that I'm doing it by bike, had certainly convinced two truckers already of my persistence. A Bulgarian trucker on my way to Spain and a Spanish trucker, preparing my trip to Bulgaria.
And so I go to bed, satisfied of the day passed, to get some sleep, convinced that 75 days from now, I will arrive at Sofia.

Biking for Sophia in the media

On Friday 29th of January a small article about the trip could be found in the regional news of  'Het Laatste Nieuws'. You can read  the article [here]
Nice detail to share: This picture has been taken in front of the approach to Mick Jaggers' country house in France on my way to Santiago de Compostella last year. [more pics]

Day of Poetry

A poem of the Belgian poet Remco Campert. It is written on a wall in Ghent [here]. I thought it was quite appropriate. In fact its about opposition. Even every small thought can have major consequences. It ends with the words: Opposition starts with asking yourself a question and then asking that question to others. In fact the poet wants to make the reader aware of the underestimated power that lies in each of us. Every storm starts with a little sigh. Every match can start a blaze... Every meter on my bike will count, every sponsored eurocent will make a difference...

To make myself clear...

More and more people are asking me for details about my trip. First of all to be honest: the idea for a sponsored trip just came to me last Saturday (only 4 days ago).

Since then, I am trying to find out myself how things should be arranged. And any help from anybody is more than welcome. Following me, the first step is now to inform as much people as we can. The main goal for me is to get to Sophia in some more than 2 weeks by bike. Our aim in the end should be to collect as much money for the good causeas possible.

Why Sophia: because
... I have been a Bulgarian Erasmus student for 4 months and I lost a part of my heart there. Practically its also interesting that I know some people there who can come and pick me up after two weeks alone on a bike.
...the distance is about the same as I know from my first trip to Santiago last year. Back then I started without any proper preparation and I made it to the Cathedral. So with some more preparation ahead, Sophia is a very realistic goal.
... of the adventure and because cycling does great things to your mind and body!
... I know it should be Sofia

Why April? Its my 'only' holiday for two weeks which is just perfect for a trip as this (I'm quite aware of the fact that not everyone will agree about 2 weeks being perfect for more than 2000 km, however, I'm fully aware of the consequences)

Why the good cause (Why not...) Last year I met several bikers who did the same. It gives an extra dimension to a trip, which only makes it more motivating to complete.

Why Haiti? In April the misery for Haitians will be as bad or maybe even worse than it is now. On the other hand I'm sure that the attention for Haiti by the media will have been reduced a lot by then . Most people will start to forget in which circumstances people still will have to live.

But as I said before I am sure that it's now to all of us to inform as much people as we know about this trip.

While I will be arranging all the practical stuff, all of you together can decide where the money goes to. Any ideas, considerations, thoughts about any subject concerning this trip are more than welcome. Thanks for the positive reactions I already got!

I will put a form to download on this blog later on. After being arrived and being back in Belgium, I will also put all the results and the ammount to pay on this blog. You will be able to put it all on one account and I will pay it then to the good cause you will have chosen, to support Haiti with.

I hope that takes away a lot of doubts and thoughts. Just keep watching this blog, keep spreading the news. I will put a summary of each country to visit later on next week. Thank you!

I have a dream...

Charlie (7) collects thousands of euros for Haïti

Charlie Simpson who is 7 (!) years old had his own idea about sponsoring Haiti. He was sponsored for
5 km cycling. The action was announced at a
UNICEF-sponsored page [click here]of the website and the
response was enormous. £ 30,000 and counting...

Quite promising...

News from the homefront!

Just some moments ago, I received a mail from Daniella Ancheva. She is responsible for Erasmus students in Veliko Tarnovo. I know here very well since I lived there for more than 3 months from February to may in 2004. In fact, VT is the ancient capital of Bulgaria. Unfortunatily, VT is a bit too far to get to in 2 weeks. But no worries, in fact that's why I planned to bike to Sofia. I know people there also. A Bulgarian friend of mine, Aleks was the first to know about this plan. He will pick me up in Sofia.
Below you can read Della's considerations about my idea. (wanted to share this with you all)

Съобщение чрез потребителския Ви профил в Google: Biking to Sofia

Dear Miel,
How do you plan to cope with the snow? Is it possible to bike in this weather?
I have just seen your pofile. Why not add "places where I have lived - Veliko Turnovo?" That is fun that you have been here.
You are very serious in your internet activities. I hardly open the Facebook site.
I wish you good luck with all your initiatives!
Della
(in case you have forgotten - Erasmus - University of Veliko Turnovo)

Biking for...

Biking for Haiti is my weblog called... But more and more people start to ask me what that really means... Therefore I'm planning to set up a poll. A poll where you can choose yourself, what happens with the money that you in fact, will spend.
The 'only' thing I will do, is take my bike and ride it for about 2345 km. Any suggestions, even apart from the poll, are more than welcome. The main goal is to support the people from Haiti... How that happens is for you to choose!

Getting prepared

After the Belgian Radio Show 1212 yesterday and having biked to Santiago de Compostella last year, the idea of a sponsored biketrip popped up in my mind.
Last year I arranged everything in one week. This year it will even be better arranged! Even more, it will help the people in Haïti!
You don't have to bike a 2000km as I plan to do, but you can support me in every way. Even more, I give you the opportunity to support the people in Haiti.
I hope this seemly crazy project and the suffering Haitians have to cope with, convince you all to support this project in every possible way.
Come and take a look to this blog every now and then, and follow my trip to Sophia and to a better future for Haïtians.

You can mail me at mieltosophia[at]gmail.com if you are interested.
Stay in touch!

If you still think I am crazy just take a look at my previous blog about my trip to Santiago de Compostella last year.[click here]

This movie shows the trip in about 20 minutes:

Thanks in advance!

Where do I want my money to go to?
